This book is invaluable not only to a professional engineer, but also if you are an amateur, who builds and runs high voltage generation devices, such as Van de Graaff generators and/or Marx generators. One of the valuable things, which is contained in this book, is the description of high voltage measurement (sure, if you want to generate high voltages, you have to have some means of measuring them!). The book contains a compilation of tables, which, given the gap size at which the discharge occurs between the two spherical electrodes of equal diameter, provides you with the estimate of the voltage at the moment of discharge. The tables contain the sphere sizes ranging from 6.25 cm to 2 m, the gap sizes from 5 mm to 2 m and give you the resulting breakdown voltages roughly from 17 kV to 2.6 MV. Having these tables, it is rather easy to estimate, for instance, the maximal output voltage of your Van de Graaff generator. Those, who want to build a Marx generator, will find a valuable discussion on the theory of operation of such generators, also dealing with some common misconceptions regarding their operation. In addition to this very practical information, for those, who want to understand the mathematics of calculation, for example, of the electrical field intensity between the electrodes of various shapes, an extensive mathematical treatment is given there as well. Get this from a library! High voltage engineering: fundamentals. [E Kuffel; W S Zaengl; J Kuffel] -- Power transfer for large systems depends on high system voltages. This book is based on the leading German reference book on high voltage engineering. It includes innovative insulation concepts, new physical knowledge and new. Also, there are the descriptions of the true commercial scale 'monster' high voltage sources, and how they operate, which is very interesting. A nice addition is a discussion of the theory of lightning, lightning dangers and lightning protection. In short, there is a lot of high voltage:-) 'bang' for the buck!

Over the past year, I've made over $100,000 publishing Kindle e-books on Amazon. Many new authors, publishers and internet marketers have been taking advantage of the Amazon Kindle platform recently, since it's a very simple and lucrative way to make money online. With the rise of e-books now massively outselling physical paperback books, there's a new opportunity for people to start making money by self-publishing e-books. The great thing is, you don't have to be an established author, or find a publishing company, or even write your own books anymore. Amazon has made it EASY for anyone – and I mean ANYONE – to publish e-books and start making money on Kindle. This blog post will serve as a guide to breaking down exactly how you can get started publishing e-books and making money online. How Making Money On Kindle Works Getting started with making money on Kindle is fairly simple. You simply sign up for a. With your KDP account, you can easily add a new book to your bookshelf within minutes. You simply fill in the title of your book, author name, description, upload a cover, upload your e-book file, select your book price, and hit publish. KDP then reviews your book within 24 hours and will publish it, making it available for sale on Amazon around the world. Amazon then does most of the selling and marketing for you, while paying you a royalty of up to 70% for every sale. Pretty cool, right? Of course, there is work you have to put in. You must come up with a book idea or niche. You must come up with a title for your book. You need to have a cover made for your book. You can either write the book yourself, or hire writers to do it for you. And of course, there are many ways to market your Kindle book, begin getting reviews, and optimizing your Kindle book for optimal sales. All of this is fairly simple to do and learn, and I'll walk you through most of it in this guide. Let Me Give You An Example Of My Kindle Book Here's an example of one of my books that I personally wrote myself. It's called and it's a self-development book that goes into some of my best strategies that have helped me become successful today. It took me about two weeks to write this book, spending several hours per day. Since publishing it, it's made me thousands of dollars and continues to generate a couple hundred dollars per month of passive income. It's also helped me to build my blog, establish a deeper relationship with my audience, and has made me an authority in my market by being a published author. You can click on the image to enlarge it, or also. As you can see, this Life Mastery book is selling for $4.99 and has 35 reviews (most of which are five stars). If someone wants to buy this Kindle book, they would simply click the orange “buy now” button and they'd be automatically charged on their credit card. The e-book is then instantly delivered to them, which they can read on their computer or on their Kindle e-reader. At the same time, I immediately get paid for this sale and KDP will send me my royalty earnings via direct deposit to my bank account every month. Amazon handles the marketing and promotion of your book. They host your book online and deliver it to your customers. They handle all of the payment processing. They deal with any potential refunds or customer support inquiries. They do most of the work for you. The more popular your book becomes (with sales, reviews, etc) then the more they will market and promote your book on their website. They even have over 300 million credit cards in their system, so customers can easily buy your books at the click of a button. How much do I get paid every sale? 21 Dumb Mistakes to Avoid When Writing Your. It for money or just selling the concept to your. Launched an EBook How To Make Money With Google. Jul 08, 2010 How To Make Money on Ebooks 1. That being said a part of me wants to make my own PDF and sell/market it myself thereby keeping ALL of the Profit. KDP has two royalty options: 35% and 70%. Your book qualifies for 70% royalties if you're pricing it anywhere from $2.99 to $9.99. Anything else from $0.99 to $200 fits into the 35% royalty window. For my Life Mastery book above, I make $3.49 for every sale. Other Kindle books that I have sell for $2.99 and will make me $2.09 per sale. I have some Kindle books that make me $50/month, while others up to $1000/month, depending on how popular the book is and the market for it. While that might not sound like much, here's the crazy part: I have published over 100+ Kindle books this year and 99% of them I didn't even write myself! How did I do it? Keep reading to find out. Finding A Profitable Niche Or Category For Your Kindle E-Book One of the biggest things that I've found that determines the success of one Kindle book over another, is the niche or market that book is in. There are some book ideas that you might come up with that there simply isn't be a big enough market for. At the same time, you might come up with a book idea that there is a big market for, but the competition is too high so it'd be difficult to get your book noticed. The secret to finding a PROFITABLE niche is finding one that has a decent-sized market, while having low competition. I will go into how I look analyze markets and niches in a bit, before that it's important to first come up with a list of potential book ideas. I published a blog post recently called that is filled with a lot of great ideas to create a Kindle book on. The way that I come up with a list of potential Kindle book ideas is simply by searching websites like,, and my local bookstore just to see what markets are popular. Sometimes I might even just think of my own personal life ask myself some questions like, “What are some of the biggest challenges or problems I've had in my life that others might have?” or “What are some of the challenges that my friends and family members have had?” I then take out a pen and paper and write down at least 10 of these ideas. Alternatively, you could also think of fiction ideas as well. If you want to create a fiction book, you could brainstorm some plot ideas or topics you could write on (or hire someone to write on) in romance, mystery, thriller, or even a children's book! Fiction is the largest market currently on Amazon, but I primarily publish non-fiction books since I've found them to be much easier to create and market. Your list could look something like this: Acne Weight Loss Photography Dog Training Binge Eating Self-Confidence Getting Rid Of Stress Parenting Stock Trading How To Write A Business Plan You get the idea? This is just an example of a list that I came up with off the top of my head. With this list, you next want to determine which ones would be the most profitable (remember: large market, low competition) so that you could create your book on. I'll go into that next 2. Analyzing The Profitability Of Your Kindle Book Ideas The first thing that you want to do is see if there is actually a market on Amazon for your book idea. This is a big mistake most people make, as they often just create a Kindle book without doing the proper market research. I've made mistakes in the past of doing this – publishing a Kindle book without doing the research, to later find out there is no market for it and it generates zero sales. This is one of the most important steps, so it's not to be over-looked. One of the ways I do this is by simply typing in the keyword for the book idea in the search bar on Amazon.com. You also want to make sure to change the selection from “All” to “Kindle Store” when doing the research, as you don't want to be looking at the results of all the other products on Amazon, only Kindle. When doing this, often times a drop-down will show up where Amazon will give you suggestions for what to type in. Check out the image below to see what I mean. Do you see that Amazon is giving me a list of suggestions when I type in the word “Acne”? Some of the suggestions are: acne, acne treatment, acne cure, acne diet, acne scars, acne remedies, etc What does this mean? This means that these are all words or phrases that people are TYPING IN on Amazon. This basically will verify to us that there is a market for this book idea, “Acne”, and that there is potential to make money from this niche. In fact, it's giving me more ideas for a book, based on the suggestions as well. What if I were to create a book on a Acne Treatment or Acne Diet? Or, what about even creating a book on how to get rid of Acne Scars? Well, Amazon is telling us there's a market for it! Next, you want to begin to analyze the COMPETITION of a niche or keyword. For each keyword that you type in and search for in the Kindle store, there will be a certain number of competing books. In the case of the “Acne” example, you can see from the image below that there are 433 other books for that keyword. Now, that's not bad, especially since other niches like “weight loss” have tens of thousands competing books. But, if we narrow our search a little bit more and target something like “Acne Treatment”, you will see the number of competing books drop significantly. For the keyword “Acne Treatment”, there are only 166 competing books. This makes it much easier for you to rank your book in the Amazon search, so that you can get at the top of the list of search results for the keywords “Acne Treatment”. The reason why you'd want your book to be able to be at the top of the list of search results, is simply because your book would then be in front of thousands of people that are searching for “Acne Treatment” everyday, which would produce you a lot of sales. If your book is nowhere to be found in the search results for “Acne Treatment” then your book likely won't get as many sales, as people won't be able to find it. When it comes to analyzing the competition of a niche, the number of other book results isn't the only factor that you want to look. You also want to look at the quality of the books that are at the top of the list of results, to see if you'd have any chance of beating them for their position. I often look at the cover of the book, the title, number of reviews it has, the price, description, and it's Amazon bestseller rank. If the top book results for my niche show up and they all have a large number of reviews (20 or more), then I'd know right away that it'd be a bit difficult to out-rank them and beat them out, as I'd often have to get more reviews than them. However, in the example above of “Acne Treatment”, you will see that the top 3 books have very few reviews. The first book has 10 reviews, the 2nd has 2 reviews, and the third has only 1. This is basically telling me that these books aren't yet well-established in this niche and that I could easily out-rank them if I got more reviews and market my Kindle book the right way. Overall, I would conclude that “Acne Treatment” would be a worthwhile niche to create a book on. Now, this is just a basic explanation of how to analyze the profitability of a niche, but there is a few more factors you want to look. I usually use a software for doing my research now, which makes things much faster and easier. I recommend a software called, as it will basically do the keyword research for you once you pop your keywords into it. It also has a lot of other cool features, such as finding reviewers for your Kindle book and tracking your books ranking for your keyword. There are cheaper options as well, such as and. All are good and have different features, but I find myself using AK Elite the most, since it's the most Mac friendly and I don't need to install additional software to run it. Create A Title And Cover For Your Kindle E-Book Once you've decided upon a niche for your Kindle book, the next step is to create a title and cover for your Kindle book. When it comes to creating a title, you want to make sure that you have the keyword for your niche in it. This will help to get your Kindle book noticed and ranked in Amazon for that keyword. So for example, here's some titles that I came up with for “Acne Treatment”. Rapid Acne Treatment – Simple Steps To Cure Acne Fast The Acne Treatment Guide – Proven, Step-By-Step Treatments To Get Rid Of Acne Acne Treatment Secrets – 10 Proven Acne Remedies That The Doctors Don't Want You To Know You want to make sure that your title is compelling, descriptive, has benefits in it, and really grabs attention. The more keywords you can have in the title, the better, as your book will show up in the search results more often. You can also look at the competing books and try to do something different as well, so your book will stand out. Once you've come up with the title, you want to create the cover. You could either create the cover yourself if you know how to use Photoshop or are good with graphics, but I'd recommend to hire someone else to do it. There's cheap options of getting a cover made, or more expensive options. The cheapest option would be using a website like. At Fiverr, if you search for “kindle cover”, you will see a ton of people that will create a Kindle book cover for you for only $5. You want to make sure you pick someone that has good feedback and has a good portfolio. Alternatively, you could invest more in a more quality book cover by hiring a more professional designer. I've hired people on the in the Warriors For Hire section, and you could also use a website like. It will cost you a bit more, but investing in a quality cover can really make a big difference in the sales of your book and make it stand out from all the rest. Write Your Kindle E-Book (Or Hire Someone To Do It For You) The next step is to write your Kindle e-book, or to hire someone to do it for you. If you're a good writer and you enjoy writing, then I'd encourage you to write your own book. It's not as difficult as you think, and if you're planning on selling the book for $2.99 then it doesn't have to be hundreds of pages. Most of the Kindle books that I sell for $2.99 are anywhere from 20-40 pages. A 20-40 page Kindle book isn't difficult to write and could easily be done within a week. When it comes to writing a Kindle book on “Acne Treatment”, the customer won't care too much how long the book is – the only thing they care about are the acne treatments and whether or not it helps them. That's the beauty of publishing non-fiction books, is the audience doesn't make as big of a deal out of the length of the book as do fiction readers. If you don't like to write or don't know how, then that's not a problem either. I've mentioned earlier that 99% of my Kindle books were created by writers that I hired. In the case of Acne Treatment, since I don't know too much about it and I'm not passionate enough about it to do the research, I'd likely hire someone to do it for me. There are many freelancer writers that you can hire that will write your book for you inexpensively and do all of the research to put it together. Some websites that you can find writers are places like,,,, and there's many others out there. There are writers that I personally use for my Kindle books that do a great job and write my books anywhere from $25-$50, which I prefer to keep them to myself and as I don't want everyone to be using them, but if you dig around enough and find the right person you can get your books done for less than $50! TIP: I will mention that you want your books to be high quality. Creating crappy books will only hurt you down the road as you'll get negative reviews and it can hurt your book sales. Sometimes it's worthwhile to invest a bit more in your book to ensure it's top-notch and will harvest positive reviews. Make sure that your book is well proof-read too! Once you have your book written, you need to format it for Kindle. Kindle books require unique formatting before publishing, as it needs to look good in a Kindle e-reader. If you are good with Microsoft Word or Pages, you can do it yourself, but need to follow the. I personally use the for all of my books now, as I can easily format them within minutes and publish it in Kindle. Publish Your Kindle E-Book On Amazon Once you have your cover and Kindle book ready, you're ready to publish it on Amazon. All you have to do is sign-up for a and click on the Bookshelf. You then want to click “Add New Title” and then follow the instructions for your book. On the next page, you'll need to fill in the book name, book contributors, book description, to verify your publishing rights, add categories and keywords for your book, upload your cover, and upload your Kindle ebook file. Everything is fairly straightforward. The main thing that I'd emphasize would be the book description. Most Kindle books on Amazon have horrible book descriptions, so you really want to spend time here to write up a really great one. KDP gives you 4000 characters, which is up to 700 words, so you want to use as much of it as you can. Here's an example of my Life Mastery book description: This book description uses all 4000 characters. To read the entire description, check out my book. I will also mention that with most of my books, I use a pen name. A pen name is essentially a made-up name that is common for authors to use. Mark Twain is a pen name, for example. I use a pen name simply because these are books that I didn't personally write, so I prefer not to keep my name behind them. I see myself more as a “publisher”, than the actual author of these books. In the case of my Life Mastery book, I use my own name behind it because I personally wrote it and am proud of it. So if you aren't comfortable using your own name, don't worry, just use a pen name or you can even put in initials, like “Stefan P.” On the next page, KDP will ask you to verify your publishing territories and to choose your royalty. As you can see, you can make your Kindle book available worldwide. This means people from the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, all over Europe, Australia, Asia, South America – literally anyone and everyone can now purchase your Kindle book. Of course, the majority of your market will be the United States, but I still make significant money from sales around Europe and around the world. As you can see, KDP allows you to set the price of your book and which royalty option you'd like to select. I set this book to be $2.99, and it will tell you how much you get paid every sale. It even shows you how much you will make on the other Kindle platforms around the world. To begin with, I usually price my book at $0.99 and the 35% royalty option, simply because I want to get as many people to buy and review my Kindle book as possible. The more people that buy and review your Kindle book, the higher the ranking will be for your book for your keyword and in the Amazon bestseller list. Once the book is ranked well and has a good number of reviews, I'll then change the price to $2.99 at the 70% royalty and start to see the money roll in. Finally, you get to “Save and Publish” your book, in which case it will be live on Amazon and for sale within 24 hours! Getting Amazon Reviews Anyone that has purchased anything on Amazon before knows the importance of reviews. Reviews are one of the biggest factors that will determine whether or not someone will buy your Kindle book. If your book has zero reviews, or has some 1 or 2 star reviews, then people likely won't buy it. On the other hand, if the book has a decent number of 4 and 5 star reviews, then most people will likely buy it. People also usually compare books based on reviews. If they are searching for an Acne Treatment book, then people will likely buy the one that has the most reviews. It's important to understand that there are two types of reviews: verified and unverified. A verified review means someone actually bought or downloaded your Kindle book, then posted a review. If a review is verified, it will say “Amazon Verified Purchase” next to it. See the example below: A review that is unverified means that someone did NOT purchase or download the book and left a review. All reviews for your Kindle book help, but verified reviews are more important and powerful. It is said that verified reviews can significantly help the ranking of your Kindle book in the Amazon search. So how do you get high quality, 5 star Amazon Verified Reviews? Amazon has some strict that is important to read over, but one of the best ways that I've found is to simply give your book away. Give it away to as many people as possible. I'd encourage you to find groups on Facebook or communities that could benefit from your Kindle book and then offer to give it away to them for free. You could simply send them a PDF of the book, or gift it to them on your Amazon book page, simply by clicking “Give As A Gift” and send it to their email. In the example of Acne Treatment, you'd want to find as many people with Acne as possible that you could give the book away to. You could simply search on and type in “Acne” and you'll find groups and pages that you could tell people about your book. If someone has acne and is looking for a solution to get rid of it, then why wouldn't they receive your book for free? You could also join forums, such as and tell people about it in there. You could also find people on and tweet people about your book. There are also a ton of Facebook groups of other authors and Kindle readers that you could send your book to, and many of them will be willing to receive your book and review it. Other resources I'd recommend would be to use the, which requires a one-time fee to join, but you can get other members to buy and review your book fairly easily. In my, I have a ton of other strategies and methods that I've used to get reviews for my Kindle books easily, including an exclusive Facebook group of members that can help promote and review your book. TIP: Keep in mind, if your book sucks, you will get negative reviews for it. Simple as that. That's why you want to ensure it's high quality. I don't encourage “fake reviews”, so don't expect others to review your book if it's bad. If your book is good, people will naturally want to say good things about it. Promoting And Marketing Your Kindle E-Book There's a ton of strategies that you can use to promote and market your Kindle e-book, most of which are free. Here are a few below: 1. KDP Select Program When you publish your book, you get an option to enroll your book in the KDP Select Program. KDP Select is a program that Amazon offers that allows you to take advantage of a Free Promotion for your Kindle book, as well as the Kindle Countdown Deals. By enrolling your book in KDP Select, it becomes exclusive to Amazon for 90 days, meaning you can't publish your Kindle book anywhere else on the internet during that period of time. Despite this, I find it still to be very beneficial as it can help you rank your Kindle book fairly easily and quickly. With KDP Select, you can offer your book for Free for a total of 5 days. You could split those 5 days up over the 3 months, or just do it all at once – it's up to you. When you do run the Free Promotion, Amazon will list your book in the Free Books section of their website and help you promote your book. I've had Kindle books get over 10,000 downloads during 5 days, which has significantly boosted the rankings of my book in a short period of time. I've also had Kindle books that have received a couple hundred downloads, so it also depends on the niche. Kindle Countdown Deals Kindle Countdown Deals allows you to offer a discount on your Kindle book for a period of time. For example, if your Kindle book is for sale at $2.99, you could offer it for $1.99 for a few days. This can help your book get noticed and generate sales. Your Kindle book must be in KDP Select to take advantage of this, which you can do so in your Bookshelf. Submitting Your Kindle Book To Websites There are a ton of websites out there that you can submit your Kindle book to for free. I usually submit my Kindle book to up to 40 websites during my KDP Select Free promotion to get extra downloads for it, while also submitting my book to websites like, and. The more exposure you can get for your book, the better. Promoting Your Book On Social Media I also use Facebook and Twitter to heavily promote my Kindle books. I will do so throughout my free promotion primarily, but also while it's paid. There are a ton of Facebook groups that you can join of Kindle readers that are looking to download new Kindle books. You can use many of these Facebook groups to get reviews for your book as well. Here are just a few You can find many, many more just by searching for them on Facebook. The same goes with Twitter. There are many people on Twitter that have large followings that will Tweet your Kindle book to their followers for free. Here are a few of them Many of these Twitter accounts have thousands of followers, and there's many more you can find just by searching on Twitter. Also, you can find people on Fiverr that will do a lot of promotion of your Kindle book for you for only $5. Here's a few Fiverr gigs that you can use: These are just a few strategies that you can use to start promoting and marketing your Kindle book. 3 Additional Kindle Marketing Strategies Finally, there are some additional marketing strategies for Kindle that I recommend. Create a KDP Author Profile Having an can really help boost sales and help people find out more about the author before purchasing. It also allows customers to find more books from you. Create A Series Of Books You want to create a series of books so that you can offer your customers more. If a customer likes your book, then they will likely buy others you have as well. In the case of Acne Treatment, you could create a book on Acne Diet, so that these two books could cross-promote each other and help you generate more sales for them. Use The Inside Of Your Book You want to use the inside of your Kindle book to help you promote your other Kindle books and make money as well. I usually have an excerpt of one of my other Kindle books inside of my Kindle book, with a link to it. This makes it easy for customers to buy your other books. I also will use the inside of my book to link to a squeeze page, which will offer something for free to my customers in exchange for their e-mail address. This can help you start building your customer list, so that you can promote additional books and products directly to their e-mail. I use for my squeeze pages and for managing email addresses. My Invitation To You I hope this guide has really helped you understand more about the process of and making money on Kindle. While I tried to cover as much as I can in this guide, I've left a lot out simply because it would take me days to share everything that I know. Publisher Note:I first wrote this post in 2012 (Aug 6), and decided to circle back and update it almost five years later. I’ve learned a lot since then and wanted to share the insights I’ve gleaned with a lot more ebooks under my belt (almost 100 as of this update), and with some things I’ve seen in my business that have changed and/or stayed the same. Here’s how I originally started this post Warning — this is a monster post — almost 2,500 3,300 words long. But, if you’re really interested in making money selling ebooks you write and self-publish, it provides some great insight. So settle in. Ok, here goes Note: This post contains affiliate links. Here’s the site’s for full details. I’m a self-published author who’s been writing and selling ebooks online since 2002. To date, I’ve written over 50. I could be a full-time self-publisher, as I earn enough from my ebooks to support myself. The only reason I don’t do it full-time is that I own/manage an. I don’t relay this info to brag, but to underscore that what I’m about to tell you comes from years of first-hand experience. I wrote this post because I receive a lot of emails and questions via social media about how to. While there are no “secrets,” there are some things I’ve noticed that have worked for me that help me to consistently earn four figures per month (I want to earn five figures JUST from selling ebooks so bad I can taste it – but it hasn’t happened – yet!). But... 9 Things I’ve Learned Self-Publishing Ebooks Since 2002 Following are 9 things I’ve noticed that helps me to earn good money selling ebooks online. I’m sure there are more, and the experiences of other self-published authors may vary. But again, these are my experiences. I hope they help – and please share your experiences in the comments section below. This self-publishing thing is in its infancy. There’s a lot we can all learn from each other. Without further do, following is how I make “a lot of money” selling ebooks online. Write within a Niche: If you’re a regular reader of my blogs and websites, you probably know that I. One of the reasons I was able to publish so many ebooks is that I write within a few defined niches (freelancing, internet marketing, self-publishing, small business marketing). And, these niches are inter-related. Update 2017:I still believe this. It makes it easier to cross-promote and sell even more. My sales numbers bear this out. Write What You Know: I write what I know about. This makes it infinitely easier to start – and finish (the stumbling block for many) – an ebook. I’ve been freelancing since 1993, worked in publishing in New York City for a decade, do internet and affiliate marketing, and have owned several small businesses. So I have first-hand experience with everything I write about. You’d be amazed at what you know that others don’t that can help them duplicate your success, while avoiding your mistakes. And if you’re thinking, “ Well, I don’t know anything that most people don’t already know,” DON’T underestimate yourself. For example, I was having lunch with a friend just the other day at a local restaurant. While chatting with the waitress, she told us how she was frustrated because she needed to order a birth certificate for her son, who played high school football. But, she had no idea of how to go about it. We told her how she can do this online and that it’s quick, easy and pretty cheap. She was like, “ I didn’t even know you could order birth certificates online.” My friend and I were incredulous. I thought everybody knew this. It just illustrates what I’m always reminding freelance writers of, which is — you know so much more than the average person who doesn’t work online. Most people use the internet – if they use it at all – just for simple things like making reservations and checking email. They don’t use it for what I call “higher” functions, like uploading photos and video, building simple websites and creating/converting files. So while what you know may seem “simple” to you; it’s light years ahead of what the vast majority know. Further proof? Ask your friends if they know what a pdf file is, or SEO, or if they know how to create and upload a simple video. FYI, here’s a great post on. Fourteen successful ebook authors give their advice. Update 2017:While people are much more comfortable doing many more tasks online, what I call “higher-level” tasks like creating and uploading ebook files, basic coding, how to start and update a blog, etc., still remain a mystery to most people. Create Ebook Pullouts: While I published 50 ebooks on Amazon last year, I didn’t actually “write” that many. So, how did I “publish” 50? I created pullouts. What are ebook pullouts? These are simply sections from a larger ebook “pulled out” and sold separately. For example, I got five pullouts from the ebook, — Really! They are: (IW-19A). Update 2017:I haven’t found this to be as profitable as I’d hoped or believed. I think it’s because if people want to know something, they’re much more likely to invest in the entire book than parts of it. What I’ve found works better than this is bundling like titles, or creating additional titles in a line. For example, once of my best sellers in the ebook. A highly successful complementary title I wrote is the. I also that I created. This line is my best seller. Be Prolific: To make more money selling ebooks, you need to write more ebooks. Piggybacking on Tip #3, ebook pullouts go a long way towards helping you to be a “prolific” writer. How Much Can Self-Published Authors Earn? A lot more than you probably think! One self-published author who earned over $5,000 in March of this year detailed how important being prolific is to earning in the post,, writing: Careers aren’t made on one or two books. Being prolific counts for a lot. At the risk of stating the obvious, the more books you have, the more books people can buy. If you’re working your buns off on promotion, and you only have one book out, you’re only going to be able to make 35 cents to a couple of dollars (depending on your book’s price) from each customer. But, if you have an eight-book series, and that same customer you worked so hard to get enjoys your work enough to go on to buy all of them, the earnings potential is much higher. Also, more books means more ways for people to stumble across your work. Update 2017:This is still true. The more you write, the more your income can shoot up. Not every title you write is going to be a big seller though, but you will likely have a couple of “breakout” titles that will account for most of your sales. I have three ebooks that account for about 90 percent of my self-publishing income. Publish via Several Outlets: Last month, I received my first payment from Barnes & Noble. I also receive monthly payments from Amazon, Clickbank and Lulu; this is in addition to the ebook sales that come from this website. This makes five outlets from which I make money selling. Let me tell ya, it’s a nice feeling! Most of the monthly payouts I receive from sites like Amazon, B&N and Lulu come at the end of the month (note dates in graphic below). So, it’s a nice chunk of change to count on – because it’s usually just in time to pay big bills like the mortgage. The best part is, it comes right to my bank account. So no matter where I am (and ), I can do my online banking worry free (eg, schedule bills to be paid, transfer funds, etc.). I still have tons of outlets I plan to publish on. Every outlet I add is another income stream. The great part about this whole publishing thing is as the ebooks are already written, as long as I keep them updated and relevant, I can make money from them for years. As an aside, because I own all the rights, I keep most of the money. That’s the beauty of self-publishing! Update 2017:More and more outlets pop up every day for indie publishers to distribute their books. In 2015, I started using Draft2Digital (D2D)as an outlet. It’s one of the best decisions I ever made because it allowed me to start publishing via many more outlets immediately. Before signing on with D2D, I was only publishing via four or five outlets. Now my books are distributed to 6 other outlets thanks to them. I upload once to D2D, and they take care of distributing it to the other outlets. An added bonus is it’s easy to format your book on their platform — and you can take the files you create there and publish them on any outlet you wish. Learn more about. I’m sure you’ll love them as much as I do. Get on a Regular Marketing Schedule: In all of my reading on ebook marketing, the advice can be confusing. You see, some successful self-publishers say spend more time writing than outright marketing. Others say you must market to make sales. I fall in the last category by the way. Recently, I had a simple eureka moment about this. It all depends on your genre. For example, I write “how to, non-fiction ebooks” for the most part. When most discuss ebooks and self-publishing, they’re talking about fiction. So if you’re a fiction writer, especially in “hot” genres like sci-fi and romance, it can be relatively easy to sell a few thousand ebooks with little marketing, especially if you find “an audience” who start to recommend you and give you a lot of reviews on sites like Amazon. Non-fiction is a whole different ball game. I advise all self-publishers though to get on some type of regular marketing schedule. This ebook game is only gonna attract more players as time goes on. Hence, it’s going to get harder to get found. So if you make marketing a habit from the get go, you’ll have a much better chance of standing up to – and out from — the competition. Update 2017:While marketing is important, what I’ve learned is that your next book is always your best “marketing.” I blog here, send out weekly newsletters and have a pretty good social media presence — on Twitter and Pinterest especially. I don’t do much over and beyond this, because I have so much other stuff on my plate. When I publish a new book though, that always seems to up the sales of existing titles. Learn more in about marketing your self-published books. 7.: Speaking of marketing, you simply must know about search engine optimization to be effective online these days. You don’t have to become an “SEO guru,” but you must have the foundational blocks in place in order to make whatever web marketing you’re doing work. Update 2017:Without my knowledge of SEO, I probably never would have gotten into self-publishing. I say this because, knowing SEO taught me how to market online. It increased the amount of money I made from the few titles I had out. Once I saw the possibilities, I was off to the races. I haven’t looked back. Build an Authority Presence: In my opinion, this is particularly important if you publish non-fiction. Via this site, I dispense a lot of free info on stuff I write about in my ebooks, eg,,,, etc. All of this not only builds my “brand”, it sets me up as an authority presence on the web – one I’m well-respected in. You can’t put a price on this. And it leads to ebook sales. Why/how? I’ve said this tons of time, but there’s a lot of garbage on the net. So before people dispense their hard-earned money, in many cases they look for trusted sources to purchase from. There will always be those who shell out money for get-rich-quick schemes where they don’t take the time to investigate who the person behind the website is. But these are not the type of customers you want to cultivate. REPEAT sales is what makes a business successful; self-publishing is no different. So get a web presence and start interacting. I don’t care if it’s a simple blogger blog (heck, even some still use this platform). You can worry about design and all that other stuff later. The main thing is to just get started. I update my blog (this site) at least once twice a week – sometimes more. I also interact on, and regularly, and have other complementary websites that I update regularly (eg, SeoWritingJobs.com). Another benefit of is that you can sell your ebooks from it. As I’ve stated here, my website is where the bulk of my sales come from — so having your own web presence is muy importante! One thing – don’t blog just to blog, or interact on social media just to market your stuff. Share insightful information that actually helps others achieve their goals. If you’re shaking your head going, “B ut I’m new at this; I don’t have any ‘insightful’ information to share,” don’t worry. Share your journey and what you’re learning as you go along. Hint: Your failures tend to be a lot more interesting than your successes, so don’t hesitate to share those in all their glorious details. To see what I mean, read my story. Update 2017:Your blog is your home on the web. It’s a place where readers can come to learn about you as an author, and where you can share information about existing books, upcoming projects and more. And, the most important thing is, it gives you a place to collect email addresses. Building a subscriber (reader) list is one of the first things you should concentrate on doing as a self-published author. Consider the following. Let’s say you have a list of 1,500 readers and you charge $3.99 for each new release. If only 10% bought when you sent out a new release announcement, that’s almost $600 right there. Now, imagine you had a list of 5,000, 10,000 or 20,000 — or more. See how you can start to make really good money — just from your subscribers? That’s the value of having a website and collecting email addresses. It’s how many self-published authors sell thousands of copies and make good money, without being a big name like Stephen King or James Patterson. Persevere: Getting 50 titles on Amazon was my main goal in 2011. As I was writing these ebooks, I was thinking: Man, my ebook sales are really going to shoot up. I can’t wait! To be honest though, sales via Amazon haven’t been nearly what I expected them to be (I still sell the majority of my ebooks from my primary website (this one)). But, they are creeping up each and every month. And, the more outlets I manage to upload to, the more money I make. So when I wanna give up or pull back on my marketing to focus on something else, I think, “ Where will I be in two years if I stop now?” I KNOW I’d regret it, so I trudge on – doing my article marketing, blogging, newsletter publishing, tweeting and placing free classified ads (these are the methods I use to market my ebooks by the way). A couple of years ago, one of my goals was to move into a strictly managerial role at my SEO writing company (NewMediaWords.biz). One of the things that I knew would allow me to do this is to increase what I made from selling my ebooks. It took a couple of years to achieve this goal – and there were so many times that I wanted to give up. But I did it. Nowadays, even if my SEO writing company never landed another client, I’d be ok. As an aside, this makes freelancing so much more fun, because I can turn down work if I don’t feel like the client is a good fit for my agency. Although it’s probably going to take me longer to achieve the financial milestone I’ve set for myself as for as ebook sales, I remind myself to stick with it – even when progress is so slow that a snail seems like the road runner! A comment by noted self-publishing guru JA Konrath in response to an article on The Guardian underscores this. He wrote: This [] isn’t a gold rush, with finite wealth to be attained. This is quite simply an easy way for writers to directly reach a worldwide audience. Not everyone will get rich. But good writers, who keep at it, have a long time to find that niche audience that will support them. Ebooks are forever. Writing articles for the Guardian not so much. [See 31 July 2012 9:19 comment in link just above] Update 2017: In 2013, I started novellas (short titles of 10,000 to 30,000 words or so). Since then, I’ve written over 40. One of my best months was $3,800 — most of that was from the sales on Amazon, as I detailed in the linked-to book. I still write non-fiction, how-to ebooks as well, and update old titles — although most of my time writing these days is spent on, simply because they don’t have to be updated like non-fiction titles. I point this out to say, I persevered and have found a formulate that works for me. I hope this reflective insight helps you on your self-publishing journey. Is Making Money Selling Ebooks Online for You? Making money online selling ebooks is not a get-rich-quick scheme. It’s not for the faint of heart. It’s not for lazy people. It’s not for those who need others to motivate them. But if you are the anti-thesis of this, ie, courageous, hard-working and self-motivated, you really can make a lot of money selling ebooks online (I’m proof of this) – if you don’t forget that last ingredient – perseverance. P.S.: Serious about Starting a Self-Publishing Career? Then You Need a Website/Blog. @Kimberly: First, it’s always a pleasure to see your gorgeous face pop up. ? I’m glad you find the info encouraging. As I said, this self-publishing thing is so new, and the more those of us who have a little experience can share, I think the quicker it’ll be for all of us to be successful. Good luck finishing up your two ebooks. I”m soooo behind on my writing this year, but I’m a get crackin’! FYI, if your ebook is anything that fits in with the theme of this site, I’d be happy to carry it if you set up an affiliate program. Yuwanda, I’m new to your site but have been so motivated by your tips and info. I actually came across you on the internet at the very best time. I lost my corporate job 4 months ago, and have started writing for myself – a dream I’ve always pursued. In addition to contract writing, I’ve started a blog, have designed a related website, and finished an e-book and 2 companion e-tutorials (with video demos.) I think once I get it all published, I’ll be able to build on it. Writing I can do, marketing not so much. But I’m learning that and so much more about the business side from you. @Patty: I earn in the mid-four figures. As I said, I earn enough to support myself WITHOUT having to take on freelance writing projects if I don’t want to. And unfortunately in this day and age, that’s quite a bit more than $1,500. I still take on freelance writing work b/c it allows me to get closer to my dream of having the option of retirement at in less than 10 years. Also, I happen to enjoy my work (I mostly manage others, I do very little writing for clients these days). Hope this additional insight helps. I struggle with the same problem Monique has. In fact, I started a few information products but never finished, because I’ve seen some people on the market with similiar material. I guess you are right Yuwanda about there will be people before us and after us. I have to keep reminding myself people resonate with certain types of people. While the other products on the market may be great, no one can quite deliver the material like I can ( my perspective) and vice-versa. I guess its just about doing it, staying focused and having a plane. Thanks Monique! You are a dear. I’m trying to work more on my social media skills (for myself; I tend to do much better by clients). It reminds me of political campaigning; every day I get emails from politicians I’ve supported in the past to donate, attend this rally, volunteer to organize, etc. In short, like campaigning, you have to do your share of “begging” readers to do “x” when it comes to social media. So, thanks again. I REALLY appreciate it. Hey, maybe I could have had a career in politics. My mouth is too big and my temper is too short.:-). @Monique: First, congrats on finishing up your report. That shows dedication. Many don’t want to do this b/c they can’t get past the idea of sitting down to write w/o getting paid — even if it’s something tha will advance their career. So again, kudos! As for your comment, “I guess what’s holding me back is that I (1) assume everyone else knows what I already know so what new can I add?, and (2) other people already share their information on same or similar topics – so, again, what new can I add?” Don’t sweat this. Practically nothing under the sun is new — and you can always add value via YOUR experiences, YOUR insights and YOUR way of communicating. There will always be those who’ve come before you, but none ARE you. So again, don’t let the idea of “it’s already been done” stop you. Thanks for droppping by, and please don’t forget to share this post on your social media outlet of choice. Thanks for sharing. The biggest take away for me is #2. There are quite a few niches where I have a good bit of information. I guess what’s holding me back is that I (1) assume everyone else knows what I already know so what new can I add?, and (2) other people already share their information on same or similar topics – so, again, what new can I add? I’ve written my first “free” report based on your advice in another article. I’ll have a few friends proofread it and then I’ll link to it from my blog. Thanks for the encouragement, and the help. But more radical still, manufacturing now goes beyond the production of the physical object, because a functioning smart, connected product requires a cloud-based system for operating it throughout its life. New manufacturing operations principles are becoming foundational for competing in a smart, connected world. (.PDF) How Smart, Connected Products Are Transforming After-Sales Service Smart, connected products improve service and efficiency and enable a fundamental shift from reactive service to preventive, proactive, and remote service. For manufacturers of long-lived products, such as industrial equipment, after-sale service can represent significant revenues and profits—partly because traditional service delivery is inherently inefficient. Technicians often must inspect a product to identify the reason for a failure and the parts needed to correct it and then make a second trip to perform the repair. New service principles are becoming foundational for competing in a smart, connected world. (.PDF) How Smart, Connected Products Are Transforming Security Until recently, IT departments in manufacturing companies have been largely responsible for safeguarding firms’ data centers, business systems, computers, and networks. With the advent of smart, connected devices, the game changes dramatically. Security may report to the chief information officer, the chief technology officer, the chief data officer, or the chief compliance officer, but whatever the leadership structure, security now cuts across product development, dev-ops, IT, the field service group, and other units. New privacy and security principles are becoming foundational for competing in a smart, connected world. (.PDF) How Smart, Connected Product Data Can Transform Companies In order to create real business value, companies need to identify how smart, connected product data can enable each function to transform their business processes and improve operational effectiveness or create strategic differentiation. Significant value across business functions is achieved from the Basic Insights that can be generated from “just one number” and identifying a specific IoT use case for a defined stakeholder is the best way to define and realize that value. Note that if you are not in the US, you must confirm yourself whether an item is free to redistribute where you are. Crediting No permission is needed to credit Project Gutenberg as the source of something you use. This applies even for commercial use. Linking No permission is needed to link to www.gutenberg.org or to any page or address within it. To link to a specific eBook, link to the landing page for that eBook, not to specific files. So, for example, you would link to www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/19033 rather than 'deep linking' to the specific HTML, plain text, etc. Www.gutenberg.org prohibits deep links automatically (based on the HTTP referrer), because from time to time the underlying structure of an eBook might change. Project Gutenberg as Publisher Project Gutenberg does not promise or enforce adherence to any particular source item. We typically make each eBook from a single print book, but sometimes multiple print books are used. Even with a single print book, we make many changes: spelling modernization, dehyphenation, conversion to HTML or other formats, etc. Therefore, we are the publisher of our eBooks, even if print sources were used from prior publishers. Sometimes an eBook will include mention of its source, and even then, this is not intended in any way that our eBooks are identical to that source print book. Quotes and extracts from Project Gutenberg items No permission is needed to use quotes from Project Gutenberg items (in the US, this would be 'fair use'). This applies for all use, including commercial use. In other words, no royalties are due for quotes even if they are used for commercial products. It is always OK to cite Project Gutenberg as the publication source (see below for how to cite), and it is also OK to not cite Project Gutenberg: your choice. Copyright page and trademarks from Source Sometimes an eBook will include a transcription or image of the original title page, verso (obverse) or other pages from a source print book used for the eBook. This may include a copyright statement, which will usually be before 1964 (see our 'copyright how-to' for details). This does not mean that item is still copyrighted. The header/footer in the eBook from Project Gutenberg will mention that such items are in the public domain in the US. Similarly, eBooks might include images or text that are (or were) trademarks in the US or elsewhere. This might include print publisher names or marks, publication associations, or marks depicted as images or words within the eBooks. Project Gutenberg is providing such items 'as is,' with no representation of ownership, or whether any such marks are still active. It is permitted, but not required, for our volunteer eBook producers to include front matter from print books they use. Citing Project Gutenberg You can use any standard bibliographic format to cite the eBooks you find in Project Gutenberg. We use 'Urbana, Illinois' as the publication source, since that is the long-time home of our efforts. Note that the publication date is also known as the 'release date', which is included in each Project Gutenberg eBook's header information. Include illustrators, translators etc., as you would for any book. You should not cite Project Gutenberg or any eBook producers as 'editors' unless they actually say they are edited (this happens rarely), because these eBooks are usually transcriptions, more or less, from printed sources. Here is an example in an APA-type format. Carroll, Lewis. Alice in Wonderland. Urbana, Illinois: Project Gutenberg. Retrieved February 21, 2016, from www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/19033. To cite the entire collection or Web site: Project Gutenberg. Retrieved February 21, 2016, from www.gutenberg.org. Of course, you should insert the actual year/date you accessed the item, and the actual year of your visit to the site. No paperwork Project Gutenberg does not fill out permission forms or otherwise grant permission for public domain items. That's what 'public domain' means: nobody can grant permission. We also do not process forms that somehow confirm non-copyright status. If you don't trust the statement in an eBook that an item is in the public domain in the US, then some sort of form from the same place (PG) that made the public domain determination would be meaningless! If you need further assurances or research that an item is in the public domain, we recommend you arrange for the research yourself, to your own specifications. US only PG is entirely based in the US, and we follow the United States laws for copyright. Not all items that are public domain in the US are public domain in other countries, and vice versa. If you are operating outside of the US, you should get professional guidance on how to proceed for things like redistributing Project Gutenberg's content. For basic information about copyright elsewhere, try this link to the. No 'sweat of the brow' Project Gutenberg claims no copyright for markup, formatting, spelling modernization, etc., and neither can you (at least in the United States). See our In particular, this means that any attempt to claim copyright on a Project Gutenberg item that's in the public domain, even after you 'add value,' will be invalid. For copyrighted content There are thousands of items in the Project Gutenberg collection which are still under copyright protection. Each copyrighted item is clearly indicated as copyrighted in the eBook's header. Unless there is an included license with the copyrighted item (such as a creative commons license), you will need to contact the copyright holder for any needed permission. Project Gutenberg cannot do this on your behalf, and does not have any ability to sublicense copyrighted works. Commercial use of Project Gutenberg trademark If you use the Project Gutenberg name, which is a registered trademark, you need to pay royalties for any commercial use (i.e., where you are trading on the Project Gutenberg trademarked name). Terms are spelled out clearly in the license included with each eBook, or read it here: If your commercial project has only a minor use of the Project Gutenberg trademark (for example, one PG eBook, and 9 from another source), then royalties are proportional. In this example of one in ten items from PG, you would pay only 1/10th of the royalties that would normally be due. Higher resolution images If you're looking for higher resolution versions of our scans, you will probably need to find your own original and make your own scan. If you upgrade before you've bought enough e-books to recoup the cost of your. Advertisement Have you noticed how sometimes, when you go to, the prices seem a little off? Maybe the Kindle version costs more than the paperback, or maybe more than the hardback as well. At the time of writing, that’s the case with The Mirror Thief by Martin Seay and The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins, to cite just two examples. It’s easy to find others if you look through the bestseller lists. So how does an ebook end up being more expensive than a real book? Surely a few hundred kilobytes of text should cost a lot less than an inch-thick stack of paper that you can hold, sniff, and even throw at the cat? We decided to investigate this phenomenon. And we discovered there’s a lot more to the pricing of books than you’d think. Physical Books Don’t Cost That Much It seems logical that physical books should cost a lot more to produce than ebooks. Publishers have to actually print something onto real paper, package it, and deliver it to a warehouse. With an ebook, publishers just upload a text file to a server and the job is done. I don't get how people can prefer kindle books to real books. I need to feel the book in my hand! — teaching beauty. For publishers, though, the physical production costs of releasing a book are only a tiny part of the whole cost. Let’s take an imaginary book, Why I’m Awesome by Harry Guinness (it got a rave review in the New York Times). The publisher sets the list price for the hardback at a fairly standard $25. Let’s look at how that breaks down. First, a retailer pays the publisher around half the recommended retail price for the book. In this example, Barnes & Noble (or one of Amazon plans brick-and-mortar stores, Donald Trump is a Loser.com, Microsoft acquires SwiftKey, your Kindle is due a new update, and LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens gets an amazing trailer.) pays $12.50. The other $12.50 goes towards costs, profit, future discounts, and so on. I, as the author, get a royalty for each copy sold. With a typical deal, that’s going to be about 15% of the list price, or $3.75 on a $25 book. The publisher isn’t going to handle distribution out to thousands of tiny bookstores either. They’re going to farm that job out to a wholesaler — a wholesaler who needs a cut, too. Let’s give them a fairly typical 10% of the list price, so around $2.50. When everything is said and done, the publisher’s production cost for a hardback book is about $2.50, or 10% of the list price. For a paperback, the cost is between $0.75 and $1. The other expenses, which ebooks share, eat up most of the rest of the money. The specifics can change a little depending on what format the book is and what sort of deal the author has, but, for the most part, these numbers fit the above pattern pretty well. This all means that the cost of producing a physical book really isn’t a major factor in the price — and that’s without touching on digital-specific production costs and the opportunity cost of having hundreds of thousands of dollars tied up in inventory. The Agency Model Another factor to consider is that ebooks are priced differently than real books. Physical books are sold to retailers at around half the list price. They can then sell them for whatever they like. The Mirror Thief‘s publisher recommends selling the hardcover for $27.95 but it’s available on Amazon for $17.91. That $10 discount is coming straight out of Amazon’s profit margin. Amazon is gambling that the extra copies it will sell will more than make up for the lost profit margin. However, ebooks are sold under the agency model. The publisher sets the price and gets 70% of each sale, and the retailer gets the remaining 30%. Amazon actually has no control over how much each Kindle copy is sold for. This is the reason ebooks sometimes cost more than real books. The publisher has listed the hardcover of The Mirror Thief at $27.95 and the ebook at $20, which is a reasonable 30% markdown. Amazon, instead of selling the hardcover for anything near the list price, has chosen to sell it at a serious discount — so much of a discount that it now costs less than the originally-cheaper ebook. People Pay for Value and Convenience When you buy a book, you’re not buying the physical pages. You’re really just. If that wasn’t the case, all books would be interchangeable. But they’re not. Try giving someone The Bible instead of Harry Potter for Christmas if you don’t believe me. With ebooks, customers have already demonstrated a willingness to pay for reading material. Kindles start at $69.99, and Once you get over the shock of the price of the Kindle Oasis, you'll find that it actually offers a lot of bang for your buck. Here are three reasons to consider buying one. (), which would pay for a lot of second-hand paperbacks. Publishers know that ebook users are some of Reading is still a popular pastime -- people are just using a wider range of devices than ever before. So, with that in mind, let's look at the best way to read books in 2016! They will pay for the books they want to read, whatever the cost. With the Kindle, in particular, they also don’t have any decent alternative way to get ebooks. You can The biggest problem with an eReader like the Amazon's Kindle is that it requires unreasonable effort to move books between different devices. Before Kindle, I fell in love with Calibre. A bit on the heavy. But it’s an awkward workaround that most users won’t ever even attempt. In other words, ebook buyers are a captive audience who have shown they’re willing to pay top dollar. Some Countries Tax Digital Products Finally, some countries, such as the UK,. Physical books, newspapers, and magazines are all exempt from VAT in the UK. Digital products, however, aren’t. This means that retailers are supposed to pay 20% VAT on any ebooks they sell — a cost they pass along to the customer — and which they don’t have to pay on hardbacks or paperbacks. Given that the production costs of physical books is about 10% of their list price, this extra 20% tax is more than enough to wipe out any savings. Amazon and other major retailers currently do their best to get around these extra taxes but governments are. So in the future, extra charges like these will make a big difference to prices. Does Price Matter to You? To me, an extra dollar or two doesn’t really matter when I’m buying a book. I’m happy to pay it for the convenience of having it arrive instantly — and also not having to get dressed and go out in public. I also don’t mind supporting the authors I love. But you may disagree. Would you ever buy an ebook that costs more than the hardback? Do you accept that the pricing of physical media and digital media is just different? Please let us know your thoughts in the comments below! Image Credits: pathdoc/Shutterstock. Nevertheless, e-books have gained more acceptance as a viable medium for literature today. One of the most common questions about going digital vs. Physical with books is cost. One would think that having no need for paper would automatically make e-books cheaper than their paper counterparts. The answer, however, is not always so simple. Is it worth buying an e-reader to save money on books? Let's take a closer look. 2007 and the $9.99 Best Seller E-Book When the Kindle was d on November 19, 2007, it retailed for $399 and Amazon was setting the price for e-book versions of its best sellers at $9.99. If we were to take $29.99 as the typical price for a non-fiction, new release best seller in 2007, then the math in favor of buying an e-reader went something like this. Assuming you bought a Kindle and purchased e-books from Amazon.com, the difference between the cost of purchasing an e-book versus a physical book could be said to be approximately $20 ($29.99 minus $9.99). Not only could they cart a library around with them, but they could save a ton of money while doing so. Then again, things aren't quite so simple. The Price Gap Between Books and E-Books Narrows Things have changed considerable since 2007. Amazon and other e-book retailers lost a battle with major publishers over that $9.99 new release price and publishers now set their own rates for e-books. Offsetting the higher price for e-books, the price of e-readers has dropped substantially and you can now buy a Kindle for $79.99 if you don't mind advertising. So how does the math work out today? To calculate this, I first took the first 10 titles on the New York Times Bestsellers non-fiction list, checked the price for both e-book and traditional print versions on Amazon.com, and averaged them. For e-books, the average price was $12.17, compared to $17.80 for the average selling price of a paper version. The difference is $5.63, which is significantly lower than it was using the averages from 2007. However, the e-reader price is also substantially lower these days than in 2007. At $79.99, you'd need to buy 14 non-fiction best sellers in order to recoup your hardware investment, after which you are saving yourself over $5 each time you buy a book. While not as compelling a case as a few years ago, the math means buying an e-reader is still a pretty good investment for a heavy reader. What About Fiction? What doesn't factor into these equations? For one thing, I'm using averages, so the mileage will vary for everyone. I looked at best seller lists and not all of us buy best sellers exclusively. I also used the non-fiction lists. The price of trade paperbacks tends to have a narrower price difference between the e-book and traditional book versions. Sometimes, the price for the paperback version might actually be lower than the e-book version, so it may take considerably longer for your e-reader to pay for itself. For example, using Amazon's pricing on the New York Times Bestseller list for fiction titles, the first ten average out to $13.59 for e-book versions versus $15.31 for printed copies, a difference of under two bucks a book. The payback period is much longer if these are the titles you usually buy. Garage Sales versus Free Classics At this point in time (since most e-books can't be resold), e-reader owners miss out on things like garage sales, rummage sales and library sales; places where a box of paperbacks could be picked up for ten bucks. On the other hand, e-book retailers like amazon.com offer a huge number of free, classic titles and they often offer heavily discounted titles from new authors to draw readers into a series. The difference is, those used books could be former best sellers and you're not likely to find many such titles on the $1 e-book list. Upgrading Your E-Reader Hardware Finally, there is upgrading to factor in. Many people who bought an e-reader three or four years ago still use their device. However, as is the case with any electronics, every subsequent iteration brings new features and improvements, so some people end up buying new hardware. Whether they sell their old e-reader or pass it along to someone else, that does change the equation. If you upgrade before you've bought enough e-books to recoup the cost of your original e-reader, then you're in the hole and not saving money by going electronic. But no matter how the math works in your case, you still have the satisfaction of books on demand in your pocket. Already got an e-reader? Check out our recommendations for.
